About The Role

Speech and Language Therapist

Location: Lancaster & Blackpool (with occasional travel to Carlisle and Ulverston)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day
Contract: Permanent, Term Time Only + 5 INSET Days

About the Role

We are looking for a passionate and skilled Speech and Language Therapist to join Beaumont College's multidisciplinary therapy team. Supporting young adults aged 18-25 with complex learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, sensory needs and communication difficulties, you will play a vital role in helping students access learning, develop communication skills and maximise their independence.

Working within a Total Communication Environment, you'll manage a varied caseload, providing specialist assessment, intervention and support for students with complex communication needs and dysphagia, while contributing to positive educational, social and life outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Manage a caseload of students with complex communication needs and dysphagia.
  • Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate evidence-based Speech and Language Therapy interventions.
  • Develop person-centred communication plans and monitor student progress.
  • Support the implementation of AAC systems, Makaton, Intensive Interaction and other communication approaches.
  • Promote and contribute to a communication-rich learning environment across the college.

Student Assessment & Transition

  • Support student assessments during the admissions process.
  • Contribute to transition planning, reviews and ongoing support.
  • Ensure communication strategies enable students to achieve their individual goals and outcomes.

Training & Consultancy

  • Deliver communication and dysphagia training to staff and key stakeholders.
  • Provide coaching, guidance and specialist advice to education and support teams.
  • Champion best practice and help embed effective communication strategies throughout the organisation.

Multidisciplinary Working

  • Work collaboratively with Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners, education staff and support teams.
  • Participate in reviews, multidisciplinary meetings and service planning activities.
  • Support the development of communication-friendly classrooms and learning environments.

Professional Practice

  • Maintain HCPC registration and practise in accordance with HCPC and RCSLT standards.
  • Keep accurate clinical records and reports.
  • Participate in supervision, appraisal and continuing professional development.
  • Support safeguarding, quality improvement and service development initiatives.

About You

Essential

  • Degree qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • HCPC registration as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex communication needs.
  • Knowledge of AAC and total communication approaches.
  • Experience assessing and managing dysphagia.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

  • Experience working with young adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs.
  • Experience delivering staff training and consultancy.
  • Knowledge of educational and residential care environments.
